FUN!

“Well. That’s my fun for the day.” That’s what my brain says once I finish my five daily word puzzles*, usually by 8:30am. Sure, there may be other moments that bring me joy–when Patrick cracks a wry joke; or Arlo announces he’s going to give himself a bath by running into the living room naked, jumping into a starfish shape, and doing jazz-hands; or a Lizzo song comes on and it aligns with my walking pace and I kinda feel like I’m dancing. Wheeeeeeeee.

But my life is not overwhelmingly fun. Part of it’s that I work seven days a week, so…when fun? Fun when? Mostly, the things I find fun require childcare, which when you’re a single parent almost always means a fifteen-dollar-an-hour premium on top of any admission costs.

That said, I’ve been trying to schedule some stuff for myself. I buy tickets to things, which forces me to find and budget for a babysitter.

A few months back, I checked out the Improv’s website. A comedian I’d seen online, Ashley Gavin, was coming. Her crowd work was sharp, and I thought what the hell and bought tickets.

When the announcer’s voice invited her onstage, I was surprised. Usually, there’s an opener. And actually there was one, but Gavin came out first and instructed us how to laugh at the show, i.e., not with smirks or giggles like we would at home scrolling our phones, but with big open-mouthed guffaws. I got it. I’ve MCed storytelling shows before, and it can be helpful to tell the audience more or less how to be a good crowd. So, OK, I was ready to laugh frequently and audibly.

Then Gavin brought up the opener. I’d never heard of him, but he was BIPOC (yes), fat (yes), and queer (yaassssssss), so I was prepared to like him a whole bunch. And he was pretty funny. Had some good bits. But he had this thing where, at the end of each punchline, he would say, “But…” Except he pronounced it, “Bbbbboooooiiiit.” Like he’d almost blow a raspberry on the B and follow it up with just the weirdest pronunciation of -ut. I know some comedians have a regular tag or a verbal disfluency that defines their voice, and it can definitely work, but maybe you didn’t catch above how I said “at the end of each punchline.” Right hand to god, at the end of each punchline. It landed less like a catch-phrase and more like a verbal tic, and it took the funny straight out of the jokes. I felt nervous, like I would clench my abs to prepare for it, and then it would come and I’d cringe.

I was relieved when Gavin came back up for her set, and I want to say up front that she was funny. I found her very funny. The last twenty minutes of her hour were worth the ticket price, but the first forty were also good, and that’s how it’s meant to be done: Tell good jokes the whole time, but build to your best stuff, and end with a bang. In that sense, it was a success.

Bbbbboooooiiiit.

Very early on, she started evaluating how her jokes were landing, and she didn’t stop. Again, that can be funny. I’ve seen comedians–Mike Birbiglia… others…–notice that a joke didn’t work and make another joke out of that. You know, pick up an imaginary notebook and mime-write “Remove joke about pickles from set, period” or whatever. And they get a laugh. If that kind of thing is done–sparingly–it can be hilarious.

But this wasn’t that. First of all, it wasn’t sparing; it was near-constant. And second, she didn’t evaluate her jokes. She evaluated us. She judged the audience on how her jokes performed. She called us slow, asked what was the matter with us, that kind of thing.

And I was like, bitch, I didn’t pay $60 for tickets, $30 on a two-menu-item minimum, and $50 on a babysitter, to come here and be assessed.

I love stand-up, so I’ll probably go back to the Improv, maybe even to see Gavin again, bbbboooooiiiit only if she agrees to get a new opener and stop judging my shit.

  10. After dealing with terrible service from another shady gambling site, I took a break from online casinos. A few weeks ago, a colleague mentioned LolaJack, and I decided to give it one last shot. Right from the start, I noticed the difference. The site is lightning quick and runs smoothly on mobile. I deposited some funds via their payment gateway and spun some slots. When I decided to cash out, I expected the usual delays. Instead, the withdrawal was processed the exact same day. No ridiculous rollover or sketchy rules, just a solid gaming experience. Highly recommended for anyone who values fast payouts and honest gameplay.

  44. I have been playing on this casino since late spring, so the initial novelty has worn off. A colleague mentioned it, mainly because I was looking for a platform with fast cashouts. The Rolletto lobby runs well into the thousands, although I rotate between a handful of favourites.

Game supply is solid: Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Play’n GO, Hacksaw and Red Tiger. Book of Dead and Reactoonz sit near the top, but the Megaways section is what keeps me coming back. Evolution powers the live section, meaning the standard roulette, blackjack and baccarat tables plus the wheel games. There is a full sports section alongside the casino, which is convenient if you do both.

The starting promotion at Rolletto spreads across several deposits: a combined match of around 1500 euros with spins on top. The rollover sits at 40x, a bit steep but manageable with the right games. Current promo codes and the latest offers are worth verifying at rolletto since terms change regularly. There are reload bonuses every week, meaning ongoing value if you stay active.

Minimum deposit is 10 euros or equivalent in crypto. Visa and Mastercard go through without problems, although the crypto options are the quickest route: a dozen different coins. Payouts to the wallet arrived the same evening, fiat payouts were slower as expected. Document check took a single attempt — uploaded ID and a utility bill, cleared overnight.

I play on the phone via the site and performance is solid. There is no native app, which honestly I prefer. The chat team is available around the clock and they are more helpful than most. They operate under a Curacao licence, which is worth knowing before you sign up. Bottom line, payouts have always come through.

Lizenz ist Curacao, also keine deutsche GGL-Lizenz. Unterm Strich stimmt die Zahlungsmoral.

  47. I have been using this platform since the start of summer, enough sessions to see how it actually works. A friend recommended it for the lotto products, but ended up staying for the casino as well. The Lottoland catalogue is surprisingly large, with both lottery products and a full casino lobby.

Software comes from Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Play’n GO and Blueprint. The top titles are easy to find, though the total count is lower than a standalone casino. The real draw is the lottery product: results from lotteries around the world are covered, including some enormous jackpot pools. Scratchcards and quick games fill out the rest.

The sign-up deal here is region specific: often a free bet plus some bonus funds. Casino bonuses appear occasionally, though the lottery promos are more frequent. Current promotions and terms should be verified at lottoland before placing your first bet. Playthrough on the casino side is in the standard range.

You can start with as little as a pound: lottery entries start from a pound. Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and Paysafecard all work. Withdrawals to PayPal came through within a day, card payouts took a bit longer. Document check went smoothly — uploaded a driving licence and a bank statement, done in a few hours.

The app is available on both iOS and Android, and it loads quickly. Lottery draws update in real time, with the casino accessible from the same app. Support is available via live chat and email, replies come within a few minutes. Licensed by the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner and UK Gambling Commission, so there is genuine oversight. Worth considering if the lottery side interests you.

  50. Signed up with Revery Play Casino for a few months now, so I have a fair idea of how it runs. A mate at work mentioned it, since I wanted better game variety. The catalogue at Revery Play is solid without being overwhelming, enough variety to keep things fresh.

Providers include Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Play’n GO, Nolimit City and Hacksaw Gaming. Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus are front and centre, though I spend more time on the newer releases. The live tables run on Evolution, so Lightning Roulette, Crazy Time, blackjack and baccarat. English speaking dealers around the clock, although peak hours can be crowded.

The welcome bonus here offers a matched deposit plus spins. Wagering is 35x, which is reasonable for a UK facing site. Active bonus terms can be checked on revery play before depositing. There are weekly reload offers.

You can start from a tenner. Cards and PayPal all work without issues. Withdrawals to PayPal landed within a day, debit card payouts were the usual two to three days. Document check was straightforward — uploaded ID and it was approved overnight.

On the phone I play through the browser and it runs well. You play through the site, which I prefer anyway. Support responds on live chat in English and wait times are short. They hold a Curacao licence, meaning no UK Gambling Commission oversight. Payouts have always come through for me.
